Washington, D.C. – Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] and over one hundred sixty colleagues today sent a bipartisan letter to President Obama urging him to take action to address and resolve the Department of Veterans’ Affairs disability claims backlog.

Rothfus today met with officials at the VA Claims Processing Center in Pittsburgh to express his concern with the backlog and to learn more about what is being done locally to address the situation.  He also conveyed his continued commitment to doing what he can to help Western Pennsylvania veterans.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] today welcomed and honored local veterans of World War II and the Korean War from Western Pennsylvania at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

“It was a tremendous honor and privilege to welcome our local World War II and Korean War veterans to our nation’s capital today,” said Rothfus.  “These men and women have given much to protect our nation and defend our freedom.  I appreciated the opportunity to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation for their service and sacrifice.”

Washington, D.C. — Representatives Tim Murphy [PA-18] and Keith Rothfus [PA-12] today called on Eric Shinseki, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), to rescind both the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award and the $62,895 bonus paid to VISN-4 Director Michael Moreland. The award was presented to Moreland just days after the VA Office of Inspector General released a scathing report highlighting major failures at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) that led to a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease.

Veterans Affairs union leaders on Thursday expressed outrage over performance bonuses awarded to top VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System leaders amid a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires' disease at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

“I was shocked,” Kathi Dahl, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2028, said about the five-figure bonuses that were first reported in the Tribune-Review. The local union represents about 2,500 employees at the VA Oakland and O'Hara facilities.

Washington, D.C. — Members of Congress representing the greater Pittsburgh region issued the following joint statement today calling on the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) to put in place new written guidelines outlining duties and responsibilities for infection control. The announcement by Reps. Mike Doyle, Tim Murphy and Keith Rothfus comes after an hour-long, closed-door meeting with Michael Moreland, Director of the Pittsburgh-based VISN 4, and Terry Gerigk Wolf, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System about the Inspector General’s review of the Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak that resulted in the deaths of five veterans. With the IG report now released, the Congressmen discussed the critical need to ensure effective policies and procedures are in place to prevent an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease from ever happening again.
